MOCITO ROJO HOLDS OFF LINE JUDGE TO WIN OWNERS APPRECIATION CUP AT DELTA DOWNS

- SHANE WILSON TRAINEE WINS HIS SECOND STAKES RACE OF THE SEASON -

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs hosted its final stakes race of the 2018-19 season on Saturday night with the $60,3000 Owners Appreciation Cup for 3-year-olds and up competing at one mile. The race was by Wayne T. Davis’s Mocito Rojo under jockey Filemon Rodriguez.

After breaking alertly, Mocito Rojo advanced toward the lead and engaged in a speed dual with Midnight Ruler. The pair volleyed for the lead through rapid fractional times of 22.85 seconds for the quarter-mile and 47.20 for the half before Mocito Rojo put away Midnight Ruler. Going into the second turn Line Judge began a sustained rally and continued to come after Mocito Rojo in the homestretch.

During the final furlong of the Owners Appreciation Cup, Rodriguez called on his mount to repel the challenge of his determined rival and the Shane Wilson trainee prevailed by a half-length at the finish line. Gentrified finished third, another 2-3/4 length behind the runner-up. Mocito Rojo finished the eight furlongs in a time of 1:40.04 over a fast track.

Mocito Rojo has now won 13-of-21 career races. He earned $36,000 for the win on Saturday and now boasts an overall bankroll of $319.750.

Bred in Kentucky by Paul and Andrena Van Doren, Mocito Rojo is a 5-year-old chestnut horse by Mutadda, out of the Orientate mare Blushing Royale.

Mocito Rojo went to the gate as the second choice of the public at odds of 2-1 and returned $6.20 to win, $2.80 to place and $2.10 to show. Line Judge, the race favorite, was worth $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. Gentrified paid $2.40 to show.

Delta Downs will close out its current season on Tuesday, March 12 with a special 10-race program that begins at 1:10 pm CST. The daytime card was scheduled to make up for a cancelled night of racing earlier in the meet due to inclement weather.
